Moss Brothers Win 2008 Baja 500

Baja 500 Race Notes from Don Moss

We started first in our class of 2 and never saw the other entry the rest of the day. He ended up dropping out somewhere around 100 miles, before the course really got rough. We ended up having two flats around race mile 170, at the same time and on the same side. We also had a track bar fail at around race mile 350. The course was 441 miles this year. Dave and I started the race. Chris got in at BFG pit 1 and changed the two tires with me. Ken and Dan got in at BFG pit 2 and drove to the Pacific side of the course. Dave drove from BFG pit 3 to Santo Tomas with Dan and changed the track bar in their section. They also came across a Protruck entry that had rolled on its side in a reservoir many miles from the sea, even though the Weatherman made it sound like they were trapped upside down in a tidal pool with the tide coming in. Ken got in with Eric McGill at Santo Tomas for the final section. There were a couple of places where many entries were getting stuck, but they seemed have no problems at all. We finished with an average speed just over 29 mph.

A huge thanks to Dennis Dunn, Daphne and Leslie Moss back at home watching and listening on the computers. They were able to send us updates and information all day and night and kept us informed on the progress with text messages and calls on cell phones and satellite phones. We have come a long ways! And to think we didn't even have radios in the old days.

Additional SCORE Notes from Don Moss

SCORE finally posted the points totals following the Baja 500, and Moss Brothers Racing is in a 3 way tie for 6th place OVERALL in the points! I do not recall us ever being in even the top 20 this far into the season. We will see how it holds out. The overall points are heavily weighted towards the larger classes. In other news, SCORE has cancelled the Las Vegas Cup race due to lack of entries. The race had been scheduled for about the third weekend in July. Class 3 has never been included in this event.
